A volcano erupts. Lava carves its way down the mountain, carving furrows into the ground, then cools. Volcanic sediments settle in and around these furrows. Years pass, wind and weather reshape the structures, seeds are carried by the wind, and streams begin to form. Lichens and mosses start to cover the surface. Everything comes together, and life is born.
Iceland – the land of fire and ice – offers this scenario in perfect detail. Such structures can be found on the high plateau, but they don't simply reveal themselves. Discovering them is complex and time-consuming. And often even more complex and time-consuming is getting to a place where you can photograph them properly.
All the preparatory work and the enormous effort required to find the subject are rewarded with fantastic and imaginative photographs. They visualize the fundamental synthesis: two or more components come together and form a new, overarching unity of life.
