"In Dialogue - Painted and Photographed"

Pop-up Pavilion Kiel

September 3rd - 13th, 2025

Opening: September 2, 2025 at 7:00 PM

The concept we developed, "In Dialogue – Painted and Photographed," has been exhibited several times in the "Real North," most recently at the Levantehaus Hamburg and the Schleswig City Museum. Its core is the realization of a subject in watercolor or acrylic mixed media on the one hand, and as a photograph on the other.

The city of Kiel has invited us to exhibit our concept "In Dialogue: Painted and Photographed" in the pop-up pavilion in the city center. As with our previous exhibitions, we are presenting "dialogue pairs" (the same motif, once painted, once photographed) and individual, independent works.

In a cross-section of our work, we present works created in dialogue over the past four years on the themes of ports, cities, and landscapes of the True North. These are complemented by new acrylic mixed media paintings and new, award-winning photographs.
Our exhibition is open Monday to Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the pop-up pavilion, Marktplatz 17 in Kiel.

It is Tuesday, September 2, 2025. At 7:00 PM, the area around St. Nicholas Church is already quite deserted, especially if it's raining.

In contrast, the pop-up pavilion opposite the church, a project space run by Kiel's city center management, was packed. A large audience, both knowledgeable and curious, gathered for the opening of the exhibition "In Dialogue – Painted and Photographed." Guests immediately realized: this is art for relaxation, well-being, and dialogue. No monologue from a seasoned opening-night speaker, but instead informative conversations with the two artists.

With the longest journey: Susanne Schöpfer from Switzerland (left), here with Stephanie Hartstang

True to their own motto, "In Dialogue," they take turns explaining their works through the exhibition and their development. On display are nine dialogue pairs and several individual works with motifs from the Schlei, from Hamburg to Venice and Iceland – all of which have something to do with water in some form.

They are always ready to answer guests' questions, such as what it's like to work so closely together as a couple? Or: How many layers do the watercolors on display typically have? Or: "That's not a photograph, is it?" regarding the photograph "Synthesis of Life." Their answers and explanations bring art closer to visitors in a very understandable, pragmatic, and entertaining way.

Some are still amazed, even after the explanation of the two award-winning photographs. Incredulous that nature is the greatest artist on earth. Two hours and three spontaneous purchases later, the event is over, alas. Visitors realize: art is good for you when you feel moved by what you see and feel. Even if no famous gallery owner rises to hymns of praise, no speaker at the opening reveals what the artist was thinking during the creative process.

The exhibition can be viewed daily until 13.09.2025 from 11:00 – 18:00 in the pop-up pavilion (marketplatz 17, Kiel), except on Sundays. At least one of the two artists will always be present.
