Reynisdrangar - the other side

About this work

Reines Beach, known worldwide as Black Sand Beach, is easily accessible not far from the Ring Road near Vik – and, unsurprisingly, is also a VERY popular tourist destination due to its easy accessibility. Although this beach is certainly not without its dangers: Large signs warn of "Danger - Death." The danger comes from the sea: Inconspicuous but deadly waves – also known as sneaker waves – often appear quite suddenly, are much larger than expected, flood the beach, and with their immense force, sweep people into the sea. There are too many people here for me, even though the rock formations of the Reynisfjall massif that reaches down to the water are truly fascinating. Instead, I concentrate on the basalt columns standing in the water, the Reynisdrangar.

According to an Icelandic legend, two trolls were trying to pull a stranded three-master ashore. Losing track of time, they reached the sheltering mountain Reynisfjall and its cave too late, were struck by the glare of the emerging sun, and turned to stone.
