Reines Beach, known worldwide as Black Sand Beach, is easily accessible, located near the Ring Road close to Vik – and unsurprisingly, its easy accessibility makes it a very popular tourist destination. However, this beach is not without its dangers: large signs warn of "Danger - Death." The danger comes from the sea: inconspicuous but deadly waves – also known as sneaker waves – often appear suddenly, much larger than expected, flooding the beach and sweeping people out to sea with their immense force. There are too many people here for my liking, even though the rock formations of the Reynisfjall, the cliffs that extend right down to the water, are truly fascinating. Instead, I focus on the basalt columns standing in the water, the Reynisdrangar.

According to an Icelandic legend, the story involves two trolls who wanted to pull a stranded three-masted ship ashore. They lost track of time, reached the protective mountain Reynisfjall and its cave too late, were struck by the glare of the emerging sun, and turned to stone.
