About this work
A volcano erupts. Lava makes its way down the mountain, carving furrows into the ground, and cooling. Volcanic sediments settle in and along the furrows. Years pass, wind and weather work on the structures, seeds fly in, and streams develop. Lichens and mosses begin to cover the surface. Everything comes together, life emerges.
Iceland—the land of fire and ice—offers this scenario perfectly. Such structures can be found on the highlands, but they don't simply appear. It's difficult and time-consuming to discover them. It's often even more difficult and time-consuming to get to a place where they can be adequately photographed.
All the preparatory work and the enormous effort required to capture the subject matter are rewarded with fantastic and imaginative photographs. They visualize the fundamental synthesis: two or more components come together to form a new, overarching unity of life.
